Islamabad Declaration, World Council of Religion, September 16th 2004
As a follow up to the Oslo declaration of June 2004, a gathering of
Muslims and Christians (Almost 300) met in Islamabad on September 16th,
2004, under the gracious chairmanship of General Pervez Musharaf, the President
of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The gathering included eminent religious
scholars and other people of influence in their respective areas.
The occasion was meant on the one hand to launch the World Council of
Religions, which emerged out of the Oslo Declaration on inter-religious
relationships, and on the other, it was to involve the majority of religious
leaders and scholars in interfaith cooperation.
The Council is established to promote Peace Justice and Harmony across
religious, social and political areas of communities at local, national
and global levels:
- We commit ourselves to promoting a spirit of harmony, understanding
and cooperation wherever we live together in our local communities, working
on the principles of caring for and sharing with others and creating a
lasting relationship amongst us.
- We commit ourselves to help build a nation, which promotes
equity, justice and tolerance, across the different communities and upholds
religious and human rights and values of all communities and honour the
opinions and feelings of others.
- We commit ourselves to creating a family across the world,
which respects human dignity, honours the sovereignty of God, and promotes
justice and peace. We also Condemn terrorism in all its forms whilst recognising
the need for addressing the root causes of hatred and violence.

Intereligious Conference Islamabad September 16th 2004
Resolutions
This conference resolves:
- That we endorse the launch of the World Council of Religions
so that it may be used as an instrument to promote peace and justice for
people of all societies and nations, all castes and creeds as well as faiths.
- The we condemn targeting innocent civilians, children, women and
the elderly.
- That we condemn the illegal detention of people and the ill treatment
of prisoners everywhere in the world.
- That we face up to the remedy the root causes which lead people
towards extreme actions and terrorism.
- That we appeal to all groups, governmental or private, involved
in conflict to please avoid attacking and desecrating places of worship
and sanctity.
- That we work towards joint actions, by sharing our resources and
personnel in areas of human development, irrespective of creed, class and
customs.
- That we work against poverty, ignorance and addiction.
- That we ensure that minorities have the due respect and equal rights.
