In this modest and straightforward volume Bishop Fernando offers both apologetic and critique. He sets out the gospel of Jesus as the gospel of The Kingdom from an Asian perspective. He answers the difficulties his fellow Asians have with certain traditional Western images whilst challenging Western Christianity to show greater awareness of the perspectives of others.
The Bishop writes with integrity from years of pastoral experience and one who has studied in depth the majority religion (Buddhism) of his home, Sri Lanka. Whilst indeed enabling his immediate neighbours to ‘Rediscover Christ’ he also enables those from outside Asia to understand a little better what makes their Sri Lankan brothers and sisters ‘tick’.
As Lord George Carey says in the foreword, religion is not dying out ‘there is a lot of religion around and making a great deal of noise – much of it confusing, complicated and contradictory. We need, I believe, new interpreters who can open up the faith and make it appealing and relevant for a new generation of seekers’. …. This I believe Bishop Kenneth Fernando has done in his short book’.
