This book is a collection of articles presented by scholars, leaders and representatives from different countries of South Asia. They were developed from the consultation on ‘Stereotypical Images of Other Faiths in the Media’ in Kathmandu, Nepal held between 14th to 17th April 2004. The participants were from Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and the United Kingdom.

To what extent are religions misrepresented in the media? Minorities are often seen as monolithic groups. They are given stereotypical images in the mass media underlinig ignorance in the monds of majority communities. The bias of mainstream media results in misunderstandings and misrepresentations that are detrimental to communal harmony, national unity and international understanding.

As societies around the globe grapple with terrorism and its root causes those involved in the media look at their own work and that of colleagues and make a case for the media to set its house in order.
