In March 2004, Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury convened a group of 30 Muslim and Christian scholars for three days of theological dialogue on the issue of prophecy.

Bearing the Word provides a record of this three day seminar. The discussions, papers presented and reflections by the thirty Christian and Muslim scholars who attended the seminar are included. Some of the key issues that were considered include:

  • How Muslims and Christians understand prophecy
  • What their scriptures have in common and how they differ in describing the prophets

What the places of Jesus and of Muhammad are in the two faiths, and in their view of each others faiths
Bearing the Word is a successor volume to The Road Ahead (CHP, 2002), and Scriptures in Dialogue (CHP, 2004).

Bearing the Word includes:

  • A lecture by Rowan Williams on ‘analysing atheism’ as a method in inter faith encounter.
  • Papers by Mustansir Mir, Miroslav Volf, Wadad Kadi, Ellen Davis, Mahmoud Ayoub and Dan Madigan.
  • Texts, commentaries and questions on the six Biblical and seven Qur’anic passages studied at the seminar.
