Archbishop of Canterbury meets Chief Rabbis in Jerusalem

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, today held talks in Jerusalem with Israel's Chief Rabbis. The Archbishop, accompanied by Bishop Suhail Dawani (Bishop in Jerusalem) and Bishop Michael Jackson (Bishop of Clogher), held the second in a series of annual discussions with Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar and Chief Rabbi Yonah Metzger of Israel, accompanied by the Chief Rabbi of Haifa Rabbi Shear Yashuv Cohen. The first in the series was held at Lambeth Palace on 5 September 2006.

Communique of the Anglican Jewish Commission

The first meeting of the Anglican Jewish Commission of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Chief Rabbinate of Israel took place at the seat of the Chief Rabbis in Jerusalem on Sunday 1st and Monday 2nd July 2007.

Archbishop of Canterbury and Chief Rabbis sign historic agreement

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams and the Chief Rabbis of Israel, Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar and Chief Rabbi Yonah Metzger today signed a joint Declaration which sets out a framework for continuing dialogue between them. Dr Williams described the agreement as historic.

Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams visits al-Azhar al-Sharif

The Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Revd Rowan Williams - speaking at one of Sunni Islam's most revered centres of learning - has urged people of faith not to use the name of God to justify violence and injustice.

In a lecture delivered at the al-Azhar al-Sharif Institute in Cairo, Archbishop Rowan said, "The greatest challenge today for our world is how to react to circumstances in a way that is faithful to God's will."

Archbishop of Canterbury's response at synagogue bomb site

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, has visited the site of one of the synagogues badly damaged in Saturday's bombings in Istanbul. Speaking outside the Neva Shalom synagogue in Shishane, Dr Williams said, "This is a heart breaking sight. In a place where the relationship between Muslims, Jews and Christians is one of co-operation and goodwill, an attack on a synagogue is an attack on every Muslim, Jew and Christian."

"I know that this tragedy will draw the religious communities even closer together and they will work to ensure that the hatred that breeds violence of this kind cannot flourish."

The Archbishop said that he had brought with him from Britain a personal message from the Chief Rabbi, Dr Jonathan Sacks, to the Jewish community in Istanbul.

We know that once we have entered we shall be swept up in events that we cannot control and that will bring us to the very edge of what we can bear, as we walk with him to Calvary and the tomb. This week tells us that God is able to change everything about us -- our fear, our sin, our guilt, our untruthfulness.
